“Cap sac” of Nung ethnic community in Cao Bang province is a ceremony to certify a man as a shaman, who can then perform worship rituals and is protected by genies, and an important event of the shaman’s life.
Only men are allowed to become shamans and they are often selected from the most prestigious in localities and already become disciples of chosen masters.
Rituals performed in strict stet-by-step process.
After rituals dedicated to the sponsoring genies, the master gives his disciple a seal certifying a man’s ability to master worshipping rituals, as well as protect and save people.
The ceremony is almost over when the master performs customs related costumes and accessories such as headbands, necklaces, bracelets and belts.
After the ceremony, the disciple is given certification with corresponding names.
A hat with a bird symbol certifies a shaman with highest level of mastering.
Both the masters and disciples in a ceremony were covered with umbrellas held by selected people with distinctive costumes.
When receiving the certifying seal, the masters guide the disciples to protecting gods for submission.
