Promoting Catholics’ role in ensuring public order in Tra Vinh

Hung My Commune in Chau Thanh district of the southern province of Tra Vinh currently has the population of  12,000 people with Catholic followers.

The Catholic people in the commune mainly reside in two villages of Dai Thon and Bai Vang with 100 households, and attend mass at Bai Vang Church of Phuoc Hao Sub-parish.

To promote parishioners’ role in maintaining public security, the communal authorities has in collaboration with the local priest and sub-parish established a club of exemplary Catholic households for promoting local Catholics’ involvement in keeping public safety and order in the locality.

Each month, the club has held an exchange meeting for updating information and discussion of measures solving newly emergent issues. The local police have also closely worked with the club for informing and gathering information relating the local public order and social safety, as well as guiding the fight against social evils and criminals in the locality.

Priest Nguyễn Thanh Trà, Deputy Head of Phuoc Hao Sub-parish in Chau Thanh district informed that the establishment of the club has practically contributed to enhance community cohesion and close relations amongst parishioners as well as between parishioners and local authorities, and that

According to Head of the People’s Committee of Hung My commune Huỳnh Thị Mỹ Nhiên, the commune currently has 102 self-management models and 14 clubs established for maintaining local public security and order, and the club of exemplary Catholic households is one of outstanding clubs in enhancing public safety and order in the locality.
