Observing Ramadan at the only mosque in Hanoi

Dozens of Muslims have gathered at Al Noor mosque in Hang Luoc street, Hoan Kiem district, Ha Noi city to celebrate Ramadan after a long time of social distancing caused by Covid-19 disease.

Al – Noor Mosque

On occasion of Ramadan 2022, which takes place from April 1 to May 1, Al-Noor Mosque reopened after the Covid-19 pandemic. Al-Noor Mosque, the only mosque for the Islamic community in Hanoi city in particular and the northern region in general, was built by Indian Muslims in 1890.

During the fasting month, all Muslim are required to abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk for 30 days.

Every year, the mosque is the only venue for many annual religious activities of the Muslim community and creates a good space for exchanges for Muslims who are living and working Vietnam North.

The Qur’an displays solemnly inside the Mosque and asks viewers to wash their hands before reading.

Ramadan is an important festival so the number of Muslims gathering at the mosque is more than usual, especially the Friday prayer, the most holy day according to concept of Islam. During the prayer, Muslim men wear traditional clothes with long Kurta and skullcap.

Al-Noor Mosque regularly organizes charity meals during Ramadan festival. This year, Mrs. Hera - the owner of Batavia restaurant, specializing in Indonesian food - has thrice offered free food for Muslims.

Sharing about her volunteer work, Mrs. Hera said that she was proud of her contributions for Muslim community in Hanoi. She expressed hope that all members, whether the Vietnamese or foreigners, would support each other in daily life.

During Ramadan month, several students who are studying in Hanoi also attend the festival. According to Hà Phương (middle), a student from the Faculty of Arabic Language of the University of Foreign Languages, she and her friends had a very interesting experience when visiting the mosque for the first time. Before entering the mosque, they helped each other to wear headscarves to comply with religious regulations.
