The 2021 National Chau Van (Spiritual Singing) Festival officially opened at Chan Suoi Temple in Hop Chau Commune, Tam Dao District, in the northern province of Vinh Phuc, on April 15.

The festival, co-organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vinh Phuc Provincial People’s Committee attracted nearly 400 artisans and singers from Chau Van clubs and folk-art associations from various provinces and cities nationwide.

The event which ran until April 18 offered an opportunity for artisans and singers to meet and exchange experience in teaching Chau Van singing to younger generations.

Chau Van is one of the typical traditional art forms of Vietnam, associated with the cultural and religious life of Vietnamese people. It is related to the hau dong (mediumship) rituals performed in the “Practices Related to Viet Beliefs in the Mother Goddesses in Three Realms” that was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The festival aimes to honour outstanding individuals and groups for their efforts in preserving, practicing and promoting the artistic values of Chau Van singing as well as to contribute to raising public awareness of preserving and inheriting the beautiful values of the traditional art form during the period of integration and development.
