A memorial service was held at Lang Cat Pagoda in Rach Gia city, Kien Giang province, on September 1 in commemoration of Most Venerable Danh Nhưỡng – Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS).
On the funeral days of the most venerable, also known as Agg Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Nanadhammo, nearly 500 delegations have paid homage to him and offered condolences.
President Trần Đại Quang, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Trần Thanh Mẫn also sent wreaths in commemoration of the late monk.
On August 31 afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình led a Government delegation to pay respect to Most Venerable Danh Nhưỡng, who was also a member of the Presidium of the VFF Central Committee.
Most Venerable Danh Nhưỡng was born on June 7, 1929, in Minh Luong commune of Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province and became a monk at the age of 16.
He passed away on August 26, 2017 at Lang Cat Pagoda.
During the war against the US, he took part in the revolutionary movement in Rach Gia township, leading tens of thousands of monks and Khmer Buddhist followers in Kien Giang to struggle for war end and national reunification.
After the south liberated and the nation reunified on April 30, 1975, the most venerable was elected to leadership positions in the VBS and the VFF Central Committee. He also served as a deputy in the National Assembly of the 11th and 12th tenures.
He devoted his entire life to Buddhism and the nation, greatly contributing to national development and the great national unity bloc.
In honour of Danh Nhưỡng’s dedication, the Vietnamese Party and State and the VFF Central Committee presented him with the Independence Order (first and second class), the Resistance Order (third class), the “For the Cause of Great Unity” medal, along with many other noble rewards.
