Kien Giang province: Hon Dat district VBS holds Buddhist congress

On April 19, Hon Dat district Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Board in Kien Giang province held the general congress for 2016 – 2021 tenure.

Attending the congress were leaders of the provincial VBS Executive Committee dignitaries from the district-level VBS Executive Boards, and representatives from pagodas in the district.

Vice Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Danh Lắm and representatives from the district authorities also joint the event.

As reported at the congress, in addition to good results recorded in Buddhist affairs, for the last five years, Buddhist dignitaries and followers in the district have conducted charity activities with the total value of over 23 billion VND, five times higher than that of the earlier term. 

The one-day congress elected 19 members to the new-term Executive Board of the district VBS with Venerable Thích Minh Khải, Deputy Chief of the provincial VBS Executive Committee’s Office as the Board Chairman.

Speaking at the congress, Vice Chairwoman of the district People’s Committee Đỗ Kim Thâu highly valued efforts made by the district VBS Executive Board in social activities over the past years. She also urged the new-term Executive Board to further promote fine traditions of Buddhism and actively participate in social and charitable programs in the locality.

During the event, local authorities awarded certificates of merit to two collectives and four individuals for their practical contributions in social and charitable activities in the locality.
