The Moon worshipping ceremony of Khmer people in Soc Trang took place on November 10 during the 4th Ok Om Bok festival – Boat racing in the Mekong Delta region 2019.

The event saw the participation of Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Lâm Văn Mẫn, representatives from local authorities and large numbers of locals and visitors.

The Khmer believe the moon is a god who controls the weather and crops throughout the year. The moon worshipping festival takes place after the harvest season.

Local people offer farm produce including coconut, banana, fruits and green sticky rice to thank the ancestors and gods for favorable weather and a bumper harvest.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Director of Culture, Sport and Tourism Department Sơn Thanh Liêm said that the Moon worshipping ceremony is held annually to preserve the  cultural values of Khmer people and promote the image of Soc Trang and its people to domestic and foreign visitors.
