An incense-offering ceremony to commemorate the 991st death anniversary of King Lý Thái Tổ was held on April 7 at Kinh Thien Palace in the UNESCO-recognized Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, in Hanoi.

The ceremony aimed to honor contributions of King Lý Thái Tổ in building and defending the country, upholding the tradition “drinking warter, remember its source”.

King Lý Thái Tổ (974 – 1028), who also as known as Lý Công Uẩn, is the first King of Lý Dynasty. He was crowned to the King by courtiers and named his era as Thuận Thiên in 1009 AD, after the last King of Early Lê Dynasty, King Lê Long Đĩnh, passed away.

In 1010 AD, the King decided to relocate the imperial capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La, and change its name to Thang Long capital. This event opened the period of independence, sovereignty and prosperity in Dai Viet. Since then Thang Long capital has become the national, cultural and economic centre of the country.
