Hoa Hao Buddhist Church releases over 7.6 tons of live fish into river

Over 7.6 tons of live fish and 180,500 breeding fish of indigenous were released into Vam Nao river, part of Hau river in An Giang province’s Cho Moi district at a ceremony held on August 24.  

The ceremony was organized by the Hoa Hao Buddhist Church’s Representative Committee in An Giang province in collaboration with General Department of Fisheries under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Nguyễn Thanh Bình, deputy head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Department of Fisheries Preservation and Development, said the activity aims to protect and preserve the diversity of aquatic species, especially precious ones with high economic value, thus restoring aquatic resources in An Giang and the Mekong Delta. 

Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Võ Thị Thanh Vân said the event has received donations worth a total of over 570 million VND (24,700 USD) from local residents and organizations in and outside the province. 

The program is part the MOU on aquatic resource protection between the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Hoa Hao Buddhist Church’s Representative Committee in the province signed on July 1, 2017.
