Ho Chi Minh City: Pagoda holds Khmer New Year meeting

A gathering of Khmer Buddhists, intellectuals and students living in Ho Chi Minh City was held in Candaransi pagoda in District 3 on April 11 to celebrate the Khmer New Year festival - Chol Chnam Thmay.

Joining Khmer people in the celebration included Deputy Minister of Home Affairs cum Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) Phạm Dũng, President of the central Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, representatives from the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Southeast region and hundreds of Khmer Buddhists in the locality.

During the gathering Most Venerable Danh Lung, Member of the central VBS Executive Council highlighted features and fine cultural values of the Khmer  Chol Chnam Thmay festival, including Buddhist activities and rituals for expression of respects and gratitude to ancestors and those who rendered meritorious services to the communities.

Speaking at the event, Chairman Phạm Dũng praised the event organization for celebrating the Khmer traditional New Year and extended New Year wishes to Khmer Buddhists and followers. He also acknowledged practical contributions made by Khmer Buddhists and people in national construction and defense.
