Funeral of Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc held in Ho Chi Minh city

During an ad limina visit to Vatican with 32 other members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Vietnam on March 1 – 10, Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh city Archdiocese Paul Bùi Văn Đọc had suffered a sudden stroke and passed away in the hospital in Rome at at 4.15 am on March 7 (Vietnam time).

The coffin of Archbishop Pau Bùi Văn Đọc was tranfered to Ho Chi Minh city Archidocese Cathedral Church on March 15. Later, Ho Chi Minh city Archdiocese held a mass for the Archbishop at Notre Dame Cathedral on March 16. The funeral of the archbishop will be held on March 17 in the chapel of Pastoral Centre in Ho Chi Minh city.

Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc was born in 1944 in the city of Da Lat in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region. He was ordained as the priest in 1970. He was appointed Bishop of My Tho diocese by Pope John Paul II in 1999. Pope Francis appointed him as the coadjutor archbishop of the archdiocese in 2013. He officially succeeded as the Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City in 2014. He served as President of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Vietnam during the 2013-2016 period.
