Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister, Vương Đình Huệ, congratulated and sent his best wishes to the Khmer people on the occasion of their traditional New Year festival Chol Chnam Thmay.
He conveyed greetings to the Khmer community at a meeting in Soc Trang province on April 7, which was jointly held by Soc Trang province and the Steering Committee for the Southwest Region.
Deputy PM Vương Đình Huệ, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for the Southwest Region, asked local authorities to pay more attention to the Khmer community in the Southwest region to help improve their living standards.
Particularly, authorities should have plans to assist needy and disadvantaged Khmer people to help them welcome a warm Chol Chnam Thmay festival, which will fall on the 14th, 15th and 16th day of the fourth Lunar month this year.
At the meeting, the Deputy PM presented gifts for Khmer dignitaries, monks and patriarchs to encourage them to continue contributing to the local and national development as well as strengthening national solidarity.
According to Sơn Minh Thắng, deputy head of the Steering Committee for the Southwest Region, the spiritual and material life of the Khmer people in the region has been improved significantly with 95-98% of local households having access to electricity, 80-90% of households having access to clean water and the poverty rate reduced to 20% by the end of 2016.
