Commemoration of self-proclaimed King Ngô Quyền and Co Loa Citadel

A grand ceremony for celebrating 1080 years (939-2019) of proclaimed King Ngô Quyền will be held in late April 2019 at Co Loa Citadel – the national special site in Dong Anh district.

The event hosted by the Thang Long Imperial Citadel in collaboration with the Hanoi culture and sports department and the People’s Committee of Dong Anh district will also mark the selection of Co Loa as the capital by King Ngô Quyền.

The ceremony will feature performances of traditional drums and historical episodes recalling Bach Dang victory and the reclamation by King Ngô Quyền, as well as cultural performances and folk games for celebrating historical events.

The event where Ngô Quyền self-proclaimed as King and moved the capital to Co Loa Citadel ended 1,000 years of Chinese domination dating back to 111 BC under the Han dynasty and opened the new history of independence and sovereignty for Vietnamese people that followed by dynasties of Early Lê, Lý, Trần, Late Lê, etc.

As part of the ceremony, the seminar themed “ King Ngô Quyền and his career for the national reconstruction” was held on March 25 at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the seminar drew 16 presentations focusing on the life and career of King Ngô Quyền, the role of Bach Dang victory in the struggle for independence of the nation, and historical heritages associated with King Ngô Quyền.
