Cham people welcome Ramuwan new year

On June 25, 2014, Cham ethnic people in the central province of Binh Thuan commenced celebrations to welcome the traditional Ramuwan New Year, the most culturally important festival of the Cham Islamic community in the locality. 

On this occasion, leaders of the provincial People’s Committee, the Vietnam Fatherland Front provincial Committee visited and congratulated Cham ethnic people on the traditional Ramuwan festival, as well as encouraged people to promote its fine traditional culture.

The traditional Ramuwan festival lasted a month with many traditional rituals, such as visiting ancestral graves, ancestors worshiping… Ramuwan festival is cultural and spiritual products nurtured and fostered by traditional belief of Cham people, contributing to enrich cultural identities of Cham people.

Creating best conditions for Cham people to welcome the traditional Ramuwan festival, Binh Thuan province People’s Committee instructed departments, districts and communes to ensure adequate supply of electricity and water for Cham people in the province, organized art performances at Cham Islamic communities.

Binh Thuan province is home to 41,000 Cham ethnic people, of whom 15,000 follow Islam. In recent years, Binh Thuan province created favorable conditions for Cham people to develop businesses and improve their material life. The religious dignitaries always encourage people to strengthen unity in local communes and help one another in economic development./.
