Chairman of Islamic Representative Committee in HCMC: Government promptly responds to mass fish deaths

The Vietnam Government has held a press conference to announce the cause of mass fish deaths along the coast of four central provinces. On this occasion, the Dai Doan Ket newspaper had a talk with Chairman of the Representative Committee of the Muslim community in HCMC Haji Lý Du Sô.

As Chairman of the Representative Committee of the Muslim community in HCMC, could you share your opinions about the handling of the Party and State on mass fish deaths?

Mr. Haji Lý Du Sô: The Government held on June 30 a press conference to announce the cause of mass fish death along the coast of four central provinces that bought great losses to localities. The Government has also announced the prime perpetrator causing environmental incidents. The Government confirmed that the source of waste from the Vung Ang area in Ha Tinh was the main cause of the fish deaths in the central region. People in the whole country have welcomed and praised the Government for its drastic action and they felt relieved and put their faith in the rule of law in Vietnam. They also acknowledged responsibilities and commitment by the Government, ministries, relevant agencies, scientists in clarifying the facts.

When mass fish deaths occurred, the Government has promptly stepped up efforts to assist fishermen affected by the tragedy as well as approved measures to address the environment impacts and ensure social welfare for people, including Muslims in VN. Could you share your thoughts about this issue?

Mr. Haji Lý Du Sô: Since the environment incident occurred, fishermen along the coastal provinces of the central region have stopped fishing offshore with so much anxieties and faced with many difficulties. The Government and people in the country quickly understood these difficulties.

Many fund raisings have been held and received hundreds of billion dong and a large amount of food for supporting fishermen and those relying on marine production affected by mass fish deaths.

Local people along the coastal provinces of the central agencies have fell so much warm upon attention of the State authorities and assistance from people throughout the country.

As one of religious organizations has been officially recognized and Muslim followers have made practical contributions to the socio-economic development of the city and the country, could you talk about the increasing contributions of religions to the development of the country, including the Muslim community in Ho Chi Minh city?

Mr. Haji Lý Du Sô: In the context of globalization trend, the Representative Committee of the Muslim community in HCMC always encourages followers to conduct religious activities in accordance with the state law, live “better secular and religious life”, improve their material and spiritual life, foster mutual respect, equality and enhance great national unity bloc.

Thereby, Muslims in Ho Chi Minh city will make practical contributions to the socio-economic development of the city.
