Nam Dinh currently has 47,000 Catholics, accounting for 25% the provincial population, residing in 199 out of 229 communes and towns.
For the past years, Catholics in the province have proactively participated in patriotic emulation movements launched by local authorities, contributing to the socio-economic development in the locality.
Over the past five years, local Catholics have donated over 20,000 m2 of land and contributed over 200 billion VND for building rural roads and charity facilities in the villages. Most of Catholic communities also encouraged members to uphold civilized lifestyles, fight against backward custom, and make practical contributions to environment protection in the locality.
In addition, during the Christmas and New Year 2018, Catholic communities in the province presented 9,442 gift boxes to the policy beneficiary families, the elderly, people with disabilities, orphans and Văn Môn Leprosy Centre (in Thai Binh province) worth over 4.8 billion VND. The gift boxes included 450 Chưng cakes, 8,052 kg of rice, 10 wheelchairs, 410 sets of clothes and other supporting facilities.
In particular, Khoai Dong parish in Nam Dinh city provided 11,520 sets of free meals for disadvantaged patients in the hospitals, worth nearly 173 million VND.
Nam Phuong parish in Hai Hau district and Bui Chu parish in Xuan Truong district also delivered “porridge of compassion” to patients in the two hospitals of Hai Hau district and Xuan Truong district.
Bui Chu diocese Caritas in collaboration with the Central Eye Hospital has implemented a cataract surgery program for nearly 400 patients in the province at Hai Hau district clinic.
