With the motto “Living the gospel within the heart of the nation”, Catholic followers in the Central province of Quang Binh have made many practical contributions for social development in the locality.
Many local Catholics have actively responded to the movement for building a new-style rural development and civilized urbanization by contributing land, working days and money for improving local road systems in communes. In particular, parishioners in Thuan Hoa village in Ba Don District’s Quang Truong commune contributed VND 283 million for making a concrete road of 2km long; Catholic follower Nguyễn Cảnh Hiệp from Huong Phuong parish in Quang Trach district voluntarily donated 25m2 of land for enlarging a local road; parishioner Hoàng Công Sự raised a sum of VND 220 million for concretizing a inter-village road, etc.
Catholics in the province have also actively joint in programs launched for promoting education, helping the poor, creating civilized styles in wedding and funeral ceremonies, and strengthening moral education for children. Each parish has set up an education promotion fund for supporting students with excellent academic results from disadvantaged families. The model “Beat of drum for education promotion” developed by Phu Kim parish in Tuyen Hoa district has been maintained and expanded into the whole district.
In addition, the priests, the parish councils and parishioners in Quang Binh have always made active response to the World Environment Day and the Environment Month launched by the provincial government with the spirits of “living green, friendly and responsibly for sustaining the environment”. Many parish have also implemented concrete models for environmental protection and climate change adaptation, such as the model “unity for environmental protection and climate change adaptation” implemented Trung Hai parish in Quang Trach commune and enlarged into other parishes in the whole province; the model “the green, clean and beautiful Saturday” implemented with many practical activities by parishes and communities of Dong Dung and Thong Thong (Ba Don district), Trung Hai and Huong Phuong (Quang Trach district), Minh Tien and Kim Lan (Tuyen Hoa district), etc. These models have effectively contributed to eliminate and reduce habits causing harms to the environment./.
