Buddhists in Gia Lai proactively engage in community works

Realizing core teachings of Buddhism, Buddhist followers and organizations in the central highlands province of Gia Lai have made many contributions in social, charitable works.  

According Superior Nun Thích nữ Hạnh Nguyện, Head of the Charity Board under the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Gia Lai, the Buddhist charities board annually launches fund-raising for providing supports of necessities, food, medicines and cash valued at billions of VND in total to people with disabilities, poor patients at hospitals, elderly, victims of natural calamities and other disadvantaged people in ethnic and mountainous areas.

In particular, the social charities implemented by the VBS in Gia Lai in 2020 reached 18.2 billion VND in value.  

Superior Nun Thích nữ Hạnh Nguyện also informed that during important Buddhist and national events, such as the Buddha’s Birthday Festival, Buddhist Parents’ Day and the Lunar New Year, Buddhist temples in Gia Lai often present gifts sets to the poor and other disadvantaged people in localities.

In 2020 the VBS executive committee in the province sent two delegations for bringing relief supplies worth nearly three billion VND to people seriously affected by floods in the Vietnam’s central provinces of Thua Thien – Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Quang Nam.

Last year, the VBS executive committee in the province also presented VND 100 million to the provincial Fatherland Front Committee for the Covid-19 prevention work.
