The Vietnam’s Institute for Buddhist Studies based in Van Hanh Monastery located in Ho Chi Minh City reviewed its work in the 2012-2017 period at a meeting held in October 14.
Present at the meeting included Most Venerable Deputy Patriarchs of the Discernment Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Thích Đức Nghiệp and Thích Trí Quảng, Most Venerable Member of the VBS Discernment Council Thích Viên Minh, Most Venerable Vice Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thiện Tâm, Senior Venerable Deputy Director of the Buddhist studies institute Thích Tâm Đức, and large numbers of Buddhist dignitaries, scholars and representatives of the municipal authorities.
As reported at the meeting, for the 2012- 017 tenure, the Institute for Buddhist Studies has recorded many results, including the publication of 200 valuable Buddhist works, organization of 56 national and international seminars and forums, its expansion to include Buddhist professional research and studies of different Buddhist schools (Old Chinese and Pali languages), as well as its monthly magazine. In particular, the international seminar themed “Buddhism and the UN millennium development goals” hosted by the Vietnam Buddhist institute drew the participation of 500 scholars from overseas and in the country.
Addressing the meeting, Most Venerable Dr. Thích Trí Quảng, Deputy Patriarch of the VBS cum Rector of the Buddhist studies institute praised contributions of the institute and Buddhist individuals in the fields of research, translation and publication of Buddhist works, as well as in preservation and promotion of Buddhist values in current society.
