The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province’s Xuyen Moc district held its 6th congress at Phuoc Duyen pagoda on September 16.
Attending the congress included Most Venerable Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province Thích Quảng Hiển and 298 delegates representing Buddhist followers in the district.
The one-day event selected 19 members to the Buddhist executive board in Xuyen Moc district for 2016-2021 tenure, with Venerable Abbot of Duoc Su pagoda Thích Nguyên Thọ re-elected as the board chairman.
As reported at the event, during the past tenure, Buddhists in the district contributed over VND 6.7 billion for construction of 52 charity houses for the poor, operation of charity kitchens in three districts, supports to people with disabilities, orphanage children, and victims of natural calamities and Orange Agent, etc.
On the occasion, the district People’s Committee presented certificates of merit to seven Buddhist groups and individuals for their social contribution to the locality in the 2011-2016 period.
Currently, over 60% of the population in Xuyen Moc district affiliates with Buddhism, with 52 Buddhist worshipping places
