On October 17, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Chapter in Tien Giang province’s Chau Thanh district solemnly held its 9th congress for the 2016-2021 tenure at Linh Phong Pagoda in the district.
Attending the event included Most Venerable Chairman of the provincial VBS’s Executive Committee Thích Huệ Minh, Venerable Head of Chau Thanh district’s VBS’s Executive Board Thích Trung Chánh, representatives of the Buddhist Executive Board from Tien Giang province’s 10 districts, and large numbers of monks, nuns and followers in the district.
Local guests at the congress included Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Bùi Thị Mai and Vice Chairman of Chau Thanh district’s People Committee Trần Thanh Phong.
As reported at the congress, Chau Thanh district’s VBS Chapter has recorded many achievements for the past tenure, including the new construction of five Buddhist pagodas and appointment of 10 abbots.
In addition, the Buddhist Chapter has contributed over VND 16 billion to social and charitable activities, including organization of health checks and distribution of free medicines, presentation of gifts to victims of Agent Orange dioxin and the poor, and scholarships to poor pupils.
The congress elected 20 members to the new-term VBS’s Executive Board for the 9th tenure (2016-2021) with Venerable Thích Trung Chánh as Head of the Board.
On the occasion, the provincial VBS’s Executive Committee presented citations of merit to one group and 15 individuals, and the local authorities also handed over certificates of merit to groups and individuals for their outstanding contributions to Buddhist development and socio-economic development in the last tenure.
