The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’ Executive Committee in Ca Mau province held a ceremony on October 26 to celebrate the VBS’s 35th founding anniversary at Sac Tu Quan Am Pagoda in Ca Mau city.
Attending the ceremony were Most Venerable President of the VBS’s Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, abbots and abbesses of 52 Buddhist pagodas in the province, representatives of the Caodai Verity Way Church (Minh Chon Dao), the Tay Ninh Caodai Church, Catholic Church and the Pure-Land Buddhist Association, and nearly 500 Buddhist followers in the province.
Local guests at the event included Chairman of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Lê Dũng, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Dương Huỳnh Khải, and Chairman of the provincial Committee for Religious Affairs Huỳnh Ngọc Sang.
As reported, over the past years, the VBS Chapter in Ca Mau province has made many practical contributions to social and charitable activities, including distribution of free medicines in 10 Buddhist clinics in the locality, construction of 300 concrete bridges, 2000 wells and over 400 charitable houses, and presentation of nearly 600 wheelchairs and over 1000 bicycles to poor pupils, as well as 400 tons of rice to poor households, etc, with the total value of nearly VND 300 billion.
On this occasion, Ca Mau provincial authorities presented certificates of merit to 11 groups and 17 individuals for their outstanding achievements in providing social welfare and contributing to socio-economic development in the province.
Currently, Ca Mau province is home to over 300,000 Buddhist followers with about 200 monks and nuns, 262 deacons, and 52 pagodas in the locality.
