Ben Tre provincial Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics (CSVC) held the 5th Congress of Vietnamese Catholics for National Construction and Defense on August 4.
Attending the congress included Priest Vice Chairman of the CSVC Phan Đình Sơn, representatives from the local authorities and over 300 typical Catholic dignitaries.
At the meeting, participating delegates reviewed and evaluated results of the patriotic movement in the local Catholic community, activities of the provincial CSVC in the period 2009-2014, and approved the working plan for the next term.
According to a congress report, over the past five years, Catholic dignitaries and followers in the province have proactively joint in movements launched by local authorities, especially the campaign “All people unite to build cultural life in residential areas and live a better secular and religious life”. The local Catholic community has contributed 2.9 billion VND for building 133 charity houses; provided construction materials worth over 800 million VND for people to repair 150 houses and presented over 400 million VND to victims of natural disasters and epidemics in the past five years.
Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Trần Ngọc Tam spoke highly of local Catholic community’s achievements over the past years and expressed his hope that Catholic community in the province would continue to make practical contributions in the coming time, contributing to the country’s prosperity and social progress.
On this occasion, the provincial People’s Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and the CSVC presented certificates and medals of merit to individuals for their outstanding contributions in 2010-2015 period.
