Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBA) Executive Committee solemnly held a grand ordination ceremony on June 26-30 at Dai Tong Lam Pagoda in the province’s Tan Thanh district.
Attending the event included Most Venerable Deputy Patriarch of the VBS Discernment Council Thích Đức Nghiệp, Most Venerable Chairman of the VBS Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn, Most Venerable Head of the provincial VBS Thích Quảng Hiển, a large number of monks and nuns from provinces of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Long An, Soc Trang and Binh Thuan, and Ho Chi Minh city, and nearly 1,300 ordinated Buddhists.
The five-day event conducted Buddhist rites for 1,283 ordinated monks and nuns, in which 1,217 monks and nuns of the Mahayana Buddhism (273 novice monks, 295 novice nuns, 250 bhiksu, 171 bhiksuni and 228 Siksamanana (novice observer of six precepts)) and 66 monks of the Theravada Buddhism took Buddhist vows. In addition, over 600 Buddhist laymen expressed vows of the Ten good deeds (295 Buddhist laymen) and the Bodhisattva vow (360 Buddhists).
On occasion of the event, the provincial VBS Executive Committee presented 500 gift sets (each set worth 300 thousand VND) to poor people in the locality.
Since 1991, the provincial VBS Executive Committee has organized eight mass ordination ceremonies for nearly 30,000 monks and nuns. Seven previous ceremonies were held under the name of Most Venerable Thiện Hòa (the founder of Dai Tong Lam Pagoda). This year event was organized in the name of Most Venerable Thích Đồng Huy to honor his merit and contributions to Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial VBS in general, and Dai Tong Lam Pagoda in particular.
