270 delegates representing 92 Khmer pagodas in Soc Trang province have gathered at the 8th Congress of the Association of patriotic monks in Soc Trang province held on November 11.
Alternative Member of the Central Party’s Committee, Chairman of Soc Trang provincial People's Council Lâm Văn Mẫn, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Ngô Hùng and Chairman of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Dương Sà Kha were amongst distinguished guest at the congress.
During the event, the congress participants passed the working plan for the 2017-2022 term. They also elected 53 members to the executive committee for the new term with Most Venerable Dương Nhơn reselected as the committee’s chairman.
As reviewed at the congress, for the last tenure (2012-2017), the association has made practical contributions to socio-development in the locality, including social charities worth over VND 19 billion and organization of Khmer language classes by pagodas for over 50.000 Khmer children.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Ngô Hùng highly appreciated the contributions of the association as well as Khmer Buddhists to local development. The Vice Chairman also urged the association’s new-elected executive committee to encourage Khmer Buddhists to promote fine traditions for further contributions to the development of the province.

On the occasion, Soc Trang provincial authorities presented certificates of merit to 10 groups and 29 individuals for their practical contribution to social unity and development for the 2012-2017 period.
Soc Trang province is home to a large population of Khmer people, accounting for 30.71% of the current total population in the province. There are 130 worshiping establishments of the Khmer Theravada Buddhism (92 pagodas and 38 Salatels) and the provincial Association for Solidarity of Patriotic Buddhist Bonzes set up nine subordinate associations at the district level.
