Archbishop Joseph Nguyễn Năng extends Buddha’s Birthday greetings to Buddhists in Ho Chi Minh City

A delegation from Ho Chi Minh City Archdiocese led by Archbishop Joseph Nguyễn Năng on May 18 paid a visit to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Executive Committee in Ho Chi Minh City based in Viet Nam Quoc Tu pagoda, ahead of the Buddha’s Birthday festival 2021.  

The Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City Archdiocese, accompanied by members of Pastoral Committee for Interreligious Dialogue and representatives of Catholic orders, was welcomed by Most Venerable Thích Như Tín, Member of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s Central Discernment Council cum Head of Discernment Committee of the VBS in Ho Chi Minh City.

During the visit, Archbishop Joseph Nguyễn Năng extended warm wishes of good health and peace to dignitaries of the city VBS and monks, nuns, and lay Buddhists in the city, on occasion of the Buddha’s Birthday festival 2021.

The Archbishop shared that the tradition of exchange visits between the two religions would practically enhance mutual understanding, respect and solidarity, and better serve the country and people, as the two religions have the same purpose of love sharing and practical services to the community.

In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic over the past year and recently, Buddhists and Catholics communities have spread loving compassion, helping not only their church members but also all those who are severely affected by the pandemic, regardless of religion and country. 

Also at the visit, Archbishop Joseph Nguyễn Năng also handed over the Message of the Holy See Council for Interreligious Dialogue sent to the Buddhist community on the occasion of the Buddha’s Birthday 2021 to the VBS executive committee.

Speaking with the guest, Most Venerable Thích Như Tín thanked the Archdiocese delegation’s visit and emphasized the importance of the solidarity between the two religions for the service of humanity.
