Archaeological artifacts found in Gia Lai stuns historians

Large numbers of domestic and foreign researchers and managers in archaeology have gathered in an international seminar on skills of An Khe early stone age held in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai on March 30.   

The international workshop aimed to review results of the five-year archaeological work in Gia Lai’s An Khe Township and seek supports from scientists and local authorities for preserving and upholding the archaeological values of the archaeological sites in An Khe.  

As reported, from 2014 to present, Vietnamese and Russian archaeologists uncovered 23 stone relic sites dating back about 800,000 years ago in An Khe hillock area.

The seminar participants highlighted the significance of the detection, excavation and study of the complex of relics dating back to the early Stone Age in An Khe town in the province to the cultural values in the Southeast Asia and the world.

Anatoly Derevyanko, archaeologist from the Russia Academy of Sciences stated that new founding artifacts of stone tools in An Khe showed differences with older histories as compared with artifacts of the early stone age found in other countries including Mongolia and Kazakhstan. These archaeological founding would play an important role in the study of human history, he said.   

According to Dr. Nguyễn Gia Đối, Acting Director of the Vietnam Archaeological Institute, an initial assessment by archaeologists pointed out that stone artifacts discovered at An Khe Archaeological site is older that relics of the early stone age found in other parts of the world, such as China, Korea, India, etc.
