Agricultural worship of Dao ethnic people in Northwestern region

02/07/2020

Migrating to Vietnam from many different regions during last seven centuries, members of Dao ethnic groups became indigenous residents in the mountains of the Northeast, Northwest and Truong Son range.

Dao people show a animistic belief that all objects, places and creators possess a distinct spiritual essence. They have developed and preserved traditional worshipping rituals for respecting these spiritual beings and praying for their blessing in order to have bumper crops and favorable weather.

Popular crops of Dao people are rice, corn and vegetables, indigo, etc, so the agricultural worship is closely linked to the planting and harvesting of these crops. In particular, they have the traditional festivals for celebrating new rice in the 9th and 10th lunar month.
