The 8th congress of Catholics for national construction and defense (2022-2027 tenure) in Hanoi city was successfully held on November 21-22.

The event taking place in International Convention Centre located in Le Hong Phong street, Ba Dinh district saw the presence of Priest Joseph Trần Xuân Mạnh, Part-time Vice President of the VFF Central Committee, President of the Central Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics (CSVC); Priest Anton Maria Dương Phú Oanh, Chairman of the CSVC in Hanoi city, and nearly 400 Catholic delegates in the city.
Distinguished guests at the event included Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee (VFF) in Hanoi city Nguyễn Lan Hương, and representatives from the Central party Commission for Mass Mobilization, the VFF Central Committee and local authorities.
The congress elected 72 members to the Catholic Solidarity Committee in the city for the 2022 – 2027 tenure with Priest Anton Maria Dương Phú Oanh reselected as Head of the Committee, and nominated 23 members to attend the 8th national congress of the Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics (2023-2028 term).
As reported at the event, over the past five years, the CSCV in the city and the Catholic Solidarity boards in districts have encouraged local Catholic communities to proactively engage in the movement launched for promoting civilize urban and rural development by donating land, working days and money for expanding roads, alleys, inland rural roads and cemeteries, etc. In particular, Catholic followers in Thanh Oai have donated 154 m2 of land, 611 million VND and 330 working days; Catholics in Thach That district gave 420 m2 of land and 13,460 working days with the total value of over 27 billion.
Catholic communities in the city have also contributed over 18 billion VND to social charities, nearly 2 billion VND for building 138 houses to disadvanatged and Catholic households with difficulties, and over 4 billion VND for presenting supports supplies to poor households in the locality.
In addition, 102 Catholic worshipping churches in 23 districts have been built and repaired with the total investment of over 900 billion VND.
On the occasion, the municipal People’s Committee presented certificates of commendation to 10 Catholic groups and individuals of the city for their outstanding contributions in 2017-2022 tenure.
