On May 20, more than 120 outstanding religious dignitaries, academics, and members of the public in An Giang province attended a conference on the East Sea situation. They protested China’s illegal placement of oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone.
At the conference, delegates representing religious dignitaries, academics, and ethnic minorities listened to the current situation in East Sea; the illegal placement of oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone; China’s violation of the United Nations’ Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS). They expressed their faith in the leadership of the Party and State and called on Vietnamese people to denounce China’s illegal actions while remaining vigilant to avoid incitement by subversive elements.
Also on May 20 afternoon, in Rach Gia city of Kien Giang province, delegates representing religious dignitaries, ethnic minorities, academics, and local Chinese association attended a conference on East Sea situation. At the conference, delegates called on China to respect international laws, stop violating Vietnam’s sovereignty and other illegal actions, and withdraw its oil rig from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
