On November 30, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Trần Thanh Mẫn led a delegation of the Southern Steering Committee to visit and extend greetings to Can Tho Diocese on occasion of its 60th founding anniversary.

The delegation consists of representatives of the Southwest Steering Committee and the provincial People’s Committee of Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau.

Speaking at the visiting reception, Vice Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn spoke highly of contributions by Can Tho Diocese’s bishops, priests and followers to the social-economic achievements in provinces of Mekong Delta.

He also expressed hope that the diocese’s Catholic dignitaries would encourage followers to live “for better religious and secular life” and make practical contributions to the social-economic development in the region.

On this occasion, the delegation presented congratulatory gifts to Catholic dignitaries of Can Tho Diocese and also extended Christmas wishes to Catholic followers in the locality.

Currently, Can Tho Diocese is home to about 190,000 Catholic followers (with nearly 2,700 Khmer Catholics and 500 followers of Chinese origin), 207 priests and 344 clergymen and clergywomen from 143 Catholic communities.

Can Tho Diocese also has seven deaneries, namely Can Tho, Dai Hai, Tra Long, Vi Thanh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau.
