VBS commemorates death anniversary of Most Venerable Thích Trí Thủ

On April 7, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Council’s Standing Committee and Ho Chi Minh city’s VBS Executive Committee solemnly held a ceremony to commemorate the 32th anniversary of the pass away of Most Venerable Thích Trí Thủ, Former President of the VBS Central Executive Council at Quang Duc monastery in Ho Chi Minh city.

Attending the ceremony were Most Venerable Vice President of the VBS Discernment Council Thích Đức Nghiệp, Most Venerable Vice President of the VBS Discernment Council cum Chairman of the city’s VBS Executive Committee Thích Trí Quảng and Most Venerable Chairman of the VBS Central Executive Council Thích Thiện Nhơn.

Officials joining the event included Deputy Director of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs’ Department of Southern Religious Affairs Trà Quang Thanh and Chairman of Ho Chi Minh city’s Committee for Religious Affairs Phạm Quang Đồng.

Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn speaks at ceremony

During the ceremony, Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn recalled great merits and contributions of the late Most Venerable Thích Trí Thủ (1909-1984) to the revival and unity of Buddhism in Vietnam. The late Most Venerable also educated many excellent generations of Buddhist monks and nuns, built and reconstructed many monasteries, and translated many Buddhist scripture into Vietnamese in his life time, said Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn.

Before becoming the first Chairman of the VBS Executive Council (from 1981 to 1984), Most Venerable Thích Trí Thủ served many high-ranking Buddhist posts in the Vietnam United Buddhist Sangha.
