The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Can Tho city successfully held on March 11 its 10th congress for the 2022 - 2027 tenure.

The event taking place at Truc Lam Phuong Nam monastery saw the presence of Most Venerable Thích Pháp Nhường, Deputy Patriarch of the Central VBS Discernment Council; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the Central VBS Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp, Standing Vice President of the Central VBS Executive Council, Most Venerable Thạch Sok Xane and Most Venerable Thích Thiện Thống, Vice Presidents of the Central VBS Executive Council, representatives of local authorities and other religious organizations, and over 300 dignitaries, deacons and lay Buddhists in the city.
The congress’s presiding board included Most Venerable Đào Như, Vice President of the Central VBS’s Executive Council cum Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in the city; Senior Venerable Thích Đức Thiện, Vice President cum General Secretary of the VBS’s Executive Council; Most Venerable Thích Huệ Thông, Deputy General Secretary of the VBS’s Executive Council cum Chief of the VBS’s Central Office in Ho Chi Minh City; Senior Venerable Thích Phước Nguyên, Deputy Chief of the VBS’s Central Office in Ho Chi Minh City; Senior Venerable Thích Bình Tâm, Standing Vice Chairman of the VBS’s Executive Committee in the city, and Vice Chairmen of the VBS’s Executive Committee in the city.
The congress reviewed religious and social affairs of the VBS in Can Tho in the 2017-2022 tenure and mapped out key plans for the 2022-2027 term, as well as elected a new 56-member executive committee of the VBS chapter in the city with Most Venerable Đào Như re-elected as Head of the VBS executive committee.
As reported at the event, the VBS chapter in the city has made practical contributions through social charities and support for the Covid-19 prevention work in the locality with the total value of over 147.5 billion VND.

During the event, one Buddhist group and 23 individuals were presented with certificates of merit from the Central VBS; 16 Buddhist groups and individuals were presented with certificates of recommendations from the municipal People’s Committee for their outstanding contributions to the national solidarity over the last five years.
The VBS chapter in Can Tho City currently has 667 monks and nuns, with 165 Buddhist worshipping places including two national relic sites and one municipal-level relic site.
