A seminar on Zen Master Nguyễn Minh Không and Vietnamese traditional medicines took place in Bai Dinh pagoda located in Ninh Binh province on June 11.
The event was co-organized by the Center for Promoting Cultural Values of Buddhism, the Vietnam Oriental Traditional Medicine Association and Bai Dinh pagoda, and attended by representatives from the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Buddhist scholars from Vietnam Buddhist Institute, Institute for Religious Studies, etc.
The event discussed three main contents including the life, the professional career and the pilgrimage path of Zen Master Nguyễn Minh Không.
Zen Master Nguyễn Minh Không was born in 1066 in Diem Xa commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province - the locality with many medicinal plants. He is one of the first physicians to receive the most noble title of Dai Viet kingdom since its foundation.
Zen Master Nguyễn Minh Không has traveled many places and discovered many precious medicinal plants that can be effectively used for treatment of human diseases, becoming the first Vietnamese physician who uses herbal medicines for health treatment. Especially, in 1136, he cured an incurable disease suffered by King Lý Thần Tông and awarded the noble title "Ly dynasty master". When he died, over 100 temples, temples and pagodas in the country worshiped him for honoring his many glorious merits.
