Quang Ninh province: VBS holds ground-breaking ceremony for construction of first pagoda on Co To island

On March 14, Quang Ninh provincial Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) held a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the first pagoda in the province’s district of Co To island.

After the ground-breaking event, the pagoda, also named Co To will be built on an area of 3,0 ha on the district island – an important outpost of the country’s Northeast Sea. The total construction cost is estimated at over VND 104 billion to be raised from Buddhists and donors in Vietnam and overseas.

Once completed, Co To pagoda will include the three-entrance gate, main hall, guest house, functioning buildings, drum tower, bell tower, etc… built with ironwood materials, tile roofs of Vietnamese traditional architecture. The first phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

Speaking at event, Venerable Abbott of Co To pagoda Thích Khai Từ stated that the construction of Co To pagoda would contribute to meet the cultural and spiritual needs for locals and tourists, as well as strengthening national security and defense of the country’s outpost island.

It’s reported that currently over 80% of Co To district island’s population are Buddhists.
