Pha Bau festival of Khmer people kicks off in Binh Phuoc

Pha Bau festival of Khmer people in Loc Khanh commune of Binh Phuoc province’s Loc Ninh district kicked off on March 17.

Pha Bau Festival in Loc Khanh commune has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as part of the national intangible cultural heritage in 2019.

Traditionally, the festival vividly reflects the agricultural life associated with water rice of local farmers. Throughout the festival, the Khmer pray for peace, good health and a bumper crop harvest. 

During this year festival, families would prepare food and tools for catching fish including fishing-tackle, baskets, fishing tools, pipe rice, water, soup, baked fish …

Under the water, men, women and children would quickly use  these tools (fishing-tackle, dosser, baskets) to catch fish.

Loc Khanh commune has nearly 50% of the population belong ethnic minorities group, of which the Khmer community accounts for the majority. Over the past years, local authorities and residents have effectively implemented solutions to preserve and promote this heritage.
