Parishioners in Thanh Hoa engages in homeland development

Nong Cong district in Thanh Hoa province is home to 13 Catholic communities under five parishes with about 10,000 Catholic members.  

Over the past years, local Catholics have actively engaged in movements for the district development under the motto “Living the Gospel in the heart of the nation” and “A good Catholic is also a good citizen”.

The life of Catholics in the district’s Truong Giang commune has been improved by proactively joining the program for new rural development. From a disadvantaged commune of the district, the commune has met 19 out of 19 criteria for new rural construction at the end of 2018.

In addition, Truong Giang commune has built a linkage model between production and consumption of key agricultural products, thereby contributing to improve local people's income. By the end of 2018, the average income per capita in Truong Giang reached 29.7 million VND per person each year, and the poverty rate fell to 3.87 percent.

With about 1,200 Catholic members, the commune’s Nguyen Ngoc village is known as a good example in building rural roads and economic development. According to Head of the village Cao Xuân Lệnh, who is also an example of Catholics "living good secular and good life", each Catholic household in the village has contributed VND 1 million for building 5 kilometers of rural roads.

Tan Son village in the district is home to 286 households including 37 Catholic families of Tan Dao parish. Catholic households in the village have promoted the spirit of solidarity in economic production, contributing to the economic development in the locality. Catholic villagers have focused their resources on producing crops with high economic values and the developing industrial and semi-industrial breeding farming models.

Thanks to that, at the end of 2018, the income of parishioners in Tan Son village reached 32.9 million VND per person each year with only one poor - ranked household amongst 37 Catholic households, and 100 percent of Catholic households in the village obtained the title of  "Cultural family".
