Nearly 100 nations send representatives to Vesak 2014

As many as 1,500 delegates from 95-100 nations and territories worldwide are expected to attend the 2014 United Nations Day of Vesak, held from May 8-10 in Bai Dinh pagoda, Ninh Binh Province.

The main theme of this celebration is "Contribution of Buddhism towards Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals" 

At the celebration, there will have 5 scientific conferences, namely: Buddhist response to sustainable development and social change; Buddhist response to global warming and environmental protection; Buddhist contribution to healthy living; peace-building and post-conflict recovery; Buddhist education and university level curriculum.

Besides, the celebration will organize the cultural and spiritual festival, tree planting program in response to environment protection, charitable distribution of gift boxes for education promotion funds, a Buddhist cultural fair…

The UN Day of Vesak Celebration is one of international cultural activities of the UN to honor values of peace and humanity. On December 15, 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations, at 54th session, item 174 has officially recognized the thrice-sacred day of Vesak (Buddha's Birthday, Enlightenment and Passing Away) as UN Day of Vesak
