National Organization Committee for UN Day of Vesak 2019 holds first meeting in Ho Chi Minh City

The National Organization Committee (NOC) for the UN Day of Vesak 2019 held on October 25 a meeting for discussing and approving the draft project for the UN Day of Vesak 2019.

Attending the meeting taking place at the Southern office of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) included Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the VBS Executive Council cum Co-Chair of the International Council for the Day of Vesak (ICDV) and President of the NOC, Most Venerable Thích Thiện Pháp, Vice President of the VBS Executive Council cum Vice President of the NOC, and members of the NOC.

The meeting adopted the master project for the organization of the UN Day of Vesak 2019 and approved the list of the national organization committee and the establishment of 25 sub- committees.

The UN Day of Vesak 2019 will take place from May 10-14 in 2019 at the Tam Chuc International Convention Center, Ha Nam Province with the main theme "Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibility for Sustainable Societies”.

The event is expected to attract 1,500 Buddhist dignitaries and scholars from 100 countries and territories worldwide, and about 15,000 domestic and foreign Buddhist followers.

The UN Day of Vesak 2019 will include general sessions, discussion panels, presentations, exhibitions, art performances, charity activities … and broadcast live on Vietnam television. The event will be funded by the VBS upon support and contribution by businesses, monks and Buddhists at home and abroad.

Addressing the event, Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn urged the subcommittees to propose its list of members for approval by the national organization committee.

He also called for close coordination between functioning bodies under the VBS and concerning state bodies for necessary preparations before the second meeting between ICDV and the national organization committee scheduled in March 2019 in Hanoi.
