11/16/2015

On November 13, National Assembly (NA) discussed the draft Law on belief and religion.

Most NA deputies agreed that now is the right time for issuing a law on belief and religion, which shows the government’s respect for people’s freedom of religion and belief.

During the meeting, NA deputies noted that many draft law’s contents amended and supplemented would contribute to redress shortcomings of the current religious law, suit current religious situation and accord with the respect for the freedom of belief and religion enshrined in the Constitution 2013  as well as make domestic law compatible to international agreements and treaties to which Vietnam has acceded or signed.

At the NA group meetings, deputies also made further discussion on some issues including the people’s right to freedom of religion and belief, recognition of religious organizations and religious legal status, religious activities involved foreign-related elements, etc.

In addition, some deputies suggested to add regulations for founding of belief establishments and specify prohibited acts in the field of belief and religion for improving transparency and effectiveness. Other delegates also commented that the draft law should contain fundamental and general principles, and contents on legal process and procedures should be regulated in a guiding decree.
