Lanh Giang temple festival opens in Ha Nam

Lanh Giang temple festival in Ha Nam province’s Duy Tien district was formally kicked off on July 14.

The festival is celebrated twice a year, in the sixth lunar month and the eighth lunar month. It is a special time for local people to express their desire for good weather and promote the tradition of “Drinking water, remembering the sources”.

Lanh Giang temple is dedicated to the worship of three generals under the reign of the 18th Hung King. The temple also worships Princess Tien Dung who is a daughter of the 18th Hung King and her husband Chu Dong Tu, one of the four immortal saints in traditional mythology of Vietnam.

Lanh Giang festival has preserved various traditional rituals including palanquin and water processions and offering and worshipping liturgies. In addition, folk games and sports activities during the festival often attract the participation of many locals and visitors.

Dragon and Kylin dances are indispensable parts of the festival

Lanh Giang temple was recognized as the national historical and cultural relic in 1996. In 2012, the provincial people's committee issued a decision approving the detailed plan for developing the relic as a spiritual and cultural tourism site on a total area of 18.43 hectares. The temple was granted a certificate for preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values by the Vietnam Union of UNESCO Associations in 2015, and recognized as the national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017.
