Introduction to Ramưwan festival of Islamic Cham community

The annual Ramưwan festival takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and it has special meanings for the Islamic Cham people. On these days, Islamic followers from 15 years of age will abstain from food and drink during the daytime in order to understand the lives of poor people and  develop patience and humility.

The festival of Bà-ni Islamic Cham community consists three parts, including visits to ancestors’ graves on the last day of August of the Islamic calendar, worship of ancestors and fasting rituals at Islam Mosques on the first day of the ninth month.

Ramưwan is a biggest festival of Bà-ni Islamic Cham people in the year. Different from the Ramadan festival of the orthodox Islamic community, the Ramưwan festival contains many Cham’s cultural characteristics, with a combination of indigenous rituals for worshipping goddesses and ancestors, offering rice and recently added activities such as various performances of art, sports and folk games…
