Implementation of heritage law creates favorable conditions for worshipping places in Soc Trang

09/17/2018

The Southern Province of Soc Trang is home to many historical and cultural relics, including pagodas with unique architectural features.

To preserve and promote the cultural heritage in the province, the provincial department of culture, sport and tourism has made survey and classification of all intangible heritage sites. In 2016, the department complied and published a book listing intangible cultural sites in Soc Trang, including worshipping places with high historical and cultural values, serving people interested in further learning and studying about these heritage sites.

So far, 42 cultural and historical sites have been classified as national (eight sites) or provincial (43 places) relics, including those of Chinese (four sites) and Khmer (ten relics) ethnic communities.

In addition, 30 cultural festivals, including several religious ones, have been classified for preservation.

It’s reported that in preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage, the fund-raising and support-gathering for upgrading and renovating worshipping sites, such as pagodas and communal houses, have receiving most encouraging results. One most typical example is the Sro Lon or Chen Kieu Pagoda located in My Xuyen district. Local authorities have successfully persuaded locals to sell goods and food-stuff at a created place, instead of along the pagoda entrance that adversely affected the solemn establishment of worship. According to Venerable Abbot of the pagoda Kim Hoàng Hưng, the local authorities also lent valuable support to the pagoda for renovations that make it more beautiful and magnificent.
