Hanoi authorities, religious organizations in the city sign coordinate program on environmental protection and climate change adaptation

The Hanoi city’s Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Standing Committee, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and religious organizations co-organized on June 21 a conference on environmental protection and climate change adaptation.

The conference focused on discussion and approval of a coordinating program for environmental protection and climate change adaptation between the city’s VFF Committee, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and religious organizations. The contents of the coordination program include editing materials for raising awareness of pollution and environmental protection, climate change adaptation amongst religious communities and local people; and the implementation of plans by the VFF Central Committee, the Hanoi city’s authorities, religious organizations for protecting the environment and responding to climate change.

The coordination program also covered trainings on knowledge of environmental protection and climate change adaptation and self-help skills in the sudden events of hail, hurricanes, tornados, floods and droughts prior to authorities intervention, as well as provision of supports to poor victims in the event of natural calamities and diseases.

The coordination also included studies, development and expansion of successful models for environmental protection, and climate change response in religious establishments, as well as encouragement of lifestyles that promote sustainable livelihood and environmental friendliness.

Specifically, from July 1 to August 30, a pilot model of the Central Steering Committee will be developed at Phap Van and Hoang Mai Pagodas, and the city-level model will be implemented at Trung Hau Pagoda in Me Linh district, Cam Co Catholic parish in Thuong Tin district and the Caodai oratory in the city.

For the 3rd quarter of 2016, local-level models will be built amongst religious and local communities. The implementation of coordinating activities including the development of pilot models will be reviewed in the 4th quarter of 2016.

From 2017 to 2020, the coordination program will be reviewed every six months and annually reported at important festivals of religions or at the Great National Unity Day.
