Hà Tĩnh: Old flag discovered

After two days of working on more that 3,500 pages of old documents in old Chinese and Vietnamese written languages (Han – Nom), experts from the general scientific library of Hochiminh city discovered a flag under Le The Tong dynasty, and currently kept by Dang family lineage in Thach Bang commune (Loc Ha district).

The old flag was 435 years old and it was carefully kept by Đặng Đôn Báu, chief of Dang family lineage in Thach Bang commune.   

The old flag has a rectangle shape, with 0.8 m wide and 1.2 m long, made of material similar to silk. All sides of the flag colored from black to yellow. In the middle of the flag there are columns of old Chinese and Vietnamese words in brightened yellow

According to Mr. Hoàng Ngọc Cương, an expert in old Chinese and Vietnamese written languages (Han – Nom) from the general scientific library of Hochiminh city, this flag was granted by the King to those passing the great exam.

The old flag currently kept by Dang Don family lineage in Thach Bang commune.

Columns of old Chinese words in the flage said: Le Quang Hung Third Year - Year of Dragon - Passing of Doctorate Exam. Le Quang Hung Third Year meant the third year under the reign of King Le The Tong (1578-1599), in 1580 (Year of Dragon).

Mr. Hoàng Ngọc Cương also informed that according to the old document keeping the names of those passing doctorate exam, the person passed doctorate exam in Dragon Year under the reign of Quang Hung was Dang Don Phuc and his name also written in doctorate steles in Quoc Tu Giam./.
