Festivals of Five Moc villages and Phu My – Kieu Mai villages in Hanoi recognized as national intangible cultural heritage

The festival of Five Moc villages was listed as the national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism on May 27.  

Historically, five Moc villages of Giap Nhat, Quan Nhan, Chinh Kinh, and Cu Loc villages in Nhan Chinh ward of Hanoi city’s Thanh Xuan district, and Phung Khoang villages in the city’s Nam Tu Liem district formed Ke Moc region in the southwest of ancient Dai La citadel (Thang Long – Hanoi nowadays).

Traditionally, the annual festival of each Moc village is held after Lunar New Year at the communal house of every village. Every 5 years, five Moc villages held a grand festival together with many rituals and performances, procession of the five villages’ tutelary, prayers for national peace and prosperity.

Currently, the common festival of five Moc villages is held from the 8th to 14th of the second lunar month, mainly by Nhan Chinh ward with many traditional rites and many folk games, vividly featuring the unique cultural activities in the life of the ancient Vietnamese people living in the vicinity of ancient Thang Long.

* In addition to the Five Moc villages festival, Hanoi also has another national intangible cultural heritage of Phu My - Kieu Mai villages exchange festival.

At the Phu My – Kieu Mai villages exchange festival

This is a traditional festival of two villages of Phu My and Kieu Mai, both in former Tu Liem district. Currently, Phu My village belongs to My Dinh 2 ward of Nam Tu Liem district, and Kieu Mai village belongs to Phuc Dien ward of Bac Tu Liem district.

Annually, on the seventh of the first lunar month, locals in Kieu Mai village make a procession of the village tutelary to Phu My village during its festival, and on the 10th of the second lunar month, a procession of Phu My village tutelary is made present at Kieu Mai village’s festival. The Phu My - Kieu Mai villages exchange festival shows a close relationship between villages in traditional Vietnamese society, contributing to strengthen the solidarity of the community and the nation.
