The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Chapter in Ho Chi Minh city held on May 22 an exhibition on life of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức in Vietnam Quoc Tu pagoda.
The exhibition marked the 55th anniversary of the self-immolation by Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức, who set himself on fire in 1963 to protest the persecution of Buddhists by the Saigon Government headed by Ngô Đình Diệm. The event showed relics, clothes, heart symbol, images of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức.
The event is part of the Buddhist cultural week in the city opened on May 20 to celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday 2018 (B.E. 2562)
Most Venerable Thích Quảng Đức was born as Lâm Văn Tức in 1897. On June 11, 1963, Most Venrable Thích Quảng Đức soaked himself in petrol, struck a match and set himself on fire in Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street and Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Ho Chi Minh city.
The Most Venerable’s body was burned in Xa Loi pagoda, however, according to several witnesses, his heart remained intact.
One completed the 13-story stupa in Vietnam Quoc Tu pagoda will be the place keeping the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức.
The exhibition on the life of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức lasts until June 3.
