Cham people in Chau Phong and Covid-19 prevention work

Tan Chau provincial city town in An Giang province is home to 5,000 Cham Muslim with most of them living in Chau Phong commune.  

Regarding the Covid-19 prevention work, Chau Phong commune authorities have strengthened communication work for enhancing public awareness and measures against the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, Cham Muslim people have strictly implemented advisories by the Ministry of Health.

Cham people usually conduct prayers five times a day in mosques. Therefore, the management boards of mosques have put dry hand washes at the entrance as well as provided hand-held thermometers at mosques. Chăm Islam dignitaries and deacons have also enhanced the communication work amongst lay people on the preventive measures against the pandemic.

Through information from the presses, radios, Cham people’s awareness of the pandemic have been enhanced and they have strictly taken preventive measures against the pandemic such as wearing facemask in public areas, frequent washing hands, limiting communication with strangers, etc.

Local Cham people often visit their relatives who are living and studying in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Therefore, local authorities have also asked them not to travel to these countries during Covid-19 epidemic. According to Chairwoman of Chau Phong commune People’s Committee Lâm Lệ Dung, local authorities have also urged Cham people who have their relatives recently returning home from aboard to provide information on their health situation.

In addition, local authorities also asked Cham people not to spread inaccurate, unverified information sources about the pandemic that might bring confusion and fear to the public.
