The 6th Congress of Vietnamese Catholics for National Construction and Defense was held on December 9 - 10, bringing together 230 local outstanding dignitaries .
In the spirit of "Cooperation-Companion-Share", the conference reviewed and evaluated results of the patriotic movement in the Catholic community, activities of Can Tho city Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics (CSVC) in the period 2009-2014, and approved the working plan for 6th term.
Reportedly, the city has 15 schools and youth centers supervised by Catholic nuns, attracting 6217 students. In previous five years, Catholic communities in the city supported the educative promotion activities by contributing 7.5 billion VND, and provided an education fee assistance of over 1.250 million VND.
Additionally, in response to a campaign launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, parishes and churches called on donors to contribute 3,3 billion VND for support of building 396 loving houses; providing construction materials for people to repair their houses, worth 368 million VND. Some parishes and congregations also conducted medical charities and free acupuncture and organized health checks for 22,000 patients and free distribution of medicines worth over 252 million VND in the past five years.
The congress elected an executive body of the CSVC’s Can Tho chapter for the 2014-2019 tenure with 90 members. Priest Phan Đình Sơn was re-elected as Chairman of the Executive Committee.
