Vu Lan (Parents’ Day) Festival is an important Buddhist tradition, closely linked to the Vietnamese tradition of the gratitude to one’s parents and ancestors.
This festival, often held in the 15th of the seven lunar month, has become a cultural lifestyle for Vietnamese people.
In Vietnam central province of Quang Binh, the Vu Lan festival 2016 has been held by all Buddhist pagodas in the province, including Dai Giac in Dong Hoi provincial city, Hoang Phuc in Le Thuy district and Thanh Quang in Bo Trach district, attracting large numbers of Buddhists and local people.
According to Most Venerable Thích Tánh Nhiếp, Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Committee in Quang Binh province, the festival has been held with a wide range of activities, including offerings to and prayers for the deceased, Buddhist preaching and art performances.
Most Venerable Thích Tánh Nhiếp also noted, people may not necessarily burn too many joss paper, and it’s important to live with the true self as the Buddha taught.
